Dr. Walid Qoronfleh
Qatar Biomedical Research Institute - HBKU
Dr. Walid Qoronfleh is currently the Director of Biotechnology at QBRI. Dr. Walid has over 20 years’ of science, technology and business experience with a wide range of operational and strategy responsibilities. Most recently, he served as the Executive Director of SDIX Life Science business, a diagnostics company (Nasdaq: SDIX), and Vice President of Personalized Medicine at NextGen Sciences, Inc. Walid has held senior appointments with increasing responsibilities at GSK [launching antibiotics Bactroban® & Augmentin®, and Engerix-B® recombinant Hepatitis B vaccine], Sanofi [advancing Plavix® - clopidogrel], the NIH-NCI, Antex Pharma, and Thermoscientific. Dr. Walid is the founder of three biotechnology companies (HT Expression, Q-Pharma & Minerva Bioscience) and he is co-Founder and Managing Director of the boutique-consulting firm Q3CG. Dr. Walid obtained his Ph.D. from The University of Louisville School of Medicine and received his MBA from Penn State University then acquired certification in biotechnology Marketing from The University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Dr Qoronfleh is the principal investigator of a 2-year funded program to build state-wide medical research infrastructure within Michigan Universities Medical Centers ($3.2M). As a co-applicant, he was also awarded a 7-year funded NIH grant to establish a proteomic center at the Medical College of Wisconsin ($16M).
Dr. Qoronfleh research interests are in the areas of biotechnology, diagnostics and personalized medicine/healthcare. He is an ad hoc reviewer for various scientific journals and a frequent speaker at international conferences. He is also editor of two journals (Journal of Social & Economical Issues of Biotechnology and The Scientific World JOURNAL– Proteins & Proteomics). Dr. Qoronfleh also holds a patent on gene expression.
Dr Qoronfleh is also involved on different levels in government-university-industry partnerships through research, technology and commercialization as well as higher education, research capacity building and grant program management.
Dr. Qoronfleh brings expertise in economic development and business improvement in knowledge-based economy (Entrepreneurship & Innovation). In 2006, Dr. Qoronfleh was an active member of the Arab Expatriate Scientists group in Qatar. He is also one of the main co-authors for the planning document for the establishment of Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), which was developed in collaboration with leading Arab expatriate scientists and scientists in Qatar (2007-2008).
