Genome Variation in Precision Medicine 2017

A key goal of precision medicine is the integration of individual genomic variation into the development of diagnostic strategies and targeted disease treatment as a way to improve disease outcomes. Enormous progress toward this goal has been made in the more than ten years since the publication of the first successful genome-wide association study, but still greater challenges remain. While geneticists continue to use genomic approaches to move from biomarkers to mechanistic understanding of disease etiology, we are also beginning to see the promise of precision medicine not only for the treatment of disease, but also for early detection and prevention. In its seventh year, the Genome Variation in Precision Medicine Nature Conference, co-organized by Nature Genetics, The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center and Anhui Medical University will highlight the progress that genomics has enabled in complex disease diagnosis and treatment—with a particular focus on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, immune-related disorders and cancer—and will explore the opportunities and challenges in integrating genomic analysis with strategies for preventive medicine.
